YouTube – Lebanon marks 36th anniv. of civil war – Press TV News.
36 years on: Peace among us, or Goodbye to Lebanon. This was the headline of the Lebanese newspapers on the 36th anniversary of the Lebanese civil war. Lebanese politicians took this opportunity to call for unity with President Michele Suleiman, saying the country needs to form a modern state, protects its sovereignty and meets the demands of its citizens. Caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri said the real lesson from the war was not to let it happen again. This comes at the time as the country is in another political deadlock amid deep divisions between the rival March 8 and March 14 coalitions. The destructive 15-year civil war began in 1975 when members of the Lebanese Christian Phalange party led by Amin Gmayel bombed a bus in a Christian area killing 27 Palestinians. This, followed by many massacres, including Sabra and Shatila massacre, which took place in the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut between September 16 and September 18, 1982. Many Palestinian and Lebanese men, women and children were beaten, raped, and killed by Christian Lebanese Phalangists. It’s believed that the Phalange party carried out the atrocities under the directives of then Israeli prime minister Arial Sharon Some analysts believe that the civil war in Lebanon was orchestrated by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to divide all of the country’s surrounding Israel, so Israel would be the only powerhouse in the region. The civil war ended in 1989 with the signing of the Taif agreement, which took place in the Saudi city of Taif. The agreement was then ratified by the Lebanese parliament.
