Windows Live/MSN Quran Service Launched

msn-messenger I’ve just come across the most amazing and interesting service that I’ve seen in quite some time.  I normally don’t get excited about MSN or Yahoo! bots, but this one is quite apart from the rest.  It’s well done, non-intrusive, and actually does what it says on the tin.

To find out more, simply open your MSN Messenger (sorry I should call it Windows Live Messenger shouldn’t I??!!), and add msnquran@hotmail.com to your MSN/Windows Live Contact List.

Then open a window with that user (start a chat with that user), and you have a choice of a fair number of useful options:

  • "quran 1 2" (if you don’t put the language, it defaults to English).
  • "quran 1 2 ar" will return in Arabic.
  • "quran 1 2 en" will return English translation.
  • "quran 1 2 ro" will return Roman Arabic (transliteration).
  • "quran search muhammad" will return each occurrence of word Muhammad in the Quran.
  • "quran search muhammad roman" will return each occurrence of word Muhammad in quran in Roman (transliterated).
  • "date" will return today’s Islamic and solar date.
  • "date 14-08-1947" will return Islamic date of the mentioned solar date.
  • "akt 110" will return Question 110 from Imam Khamenei(HA)’s Islamic Practical Laws Manual.
  • "akt search prayer travel" will return question numbers after searching prayer and travel from  Imam Khamenei(HA)’s Islamic Practical Laws Manual, you can then use the previous function to get the answers.

More functionality will be added from what I understand and a constantly updated Help Page for the MSN Quran Bot can be found here.

I found out about this from a post on ShiaChat by Syed Khurram, so kudos to the respected Syed for that.

Right that’s all for now, but this looks quite interesting.  I wonder what other features they’ll incorporate?  Tell you what, if you have a feature you’d like added, then let me know, perhaps we can talk to the guys who developed this bot and get them to add some features that you’ve asked for?

Dump your thoughts straight into the comment box, it’s what its there for.  Enjoy,

Warm Regards,

Shabbir

    Very nice!

I like the idea, there is potentiality in this application, I hope it will be further developed and perfected.

Speaking of Quran Service I would like to take the opportunity to tip of an excellent Quran program, available for Windows, Mac and Linux (!) called “Zekr”.

Zekr is an open platform Quran study tool for simply browsing and researching on the Holy Quran. It is a Quran-based project, planned to be a universal, open source, and cross-platform application to perform most of the usual refers to Quran. The main idea is to build an as generic as possible platform to accept different Islamic resources.

Current release, 0.6.0, has Advanced search (Boolean operators, groups, wild cards, scopes, fuzzy search, …), Uthman Taha theme, and basic command line support.

In my opinion it is fast and works very smoothly. There are a bunch of translations to download (even Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi’s(HA) Farsi translation!) and best of all the search option works like a charm.

    The official site is: http://siahe.com/zekr/
The program can be downloaded there, more information regarding the software is also available. Definitely worth trying out!

    Peace,
    Ehsan
