Iranian students demand UK apology
A group of Iranian students have gathered outside the British Embassy in Tehran to demand an apology from London for calling for “intelligence-led operations” in Iran.
British officials must apologize to the Iranian nation, said a statement issued by a group of Tehran University students on Thursday.
The statement condemned efforts by the “global arrogance” and Britain to interfere in Iran’s domestic affairs.
The students chanted slogans and called for a serious diplomatic reaction from Tehran, IRINN reported.
“Expel the British ambassador,” and “Shut down the British Embassy,” chanted the students.
The gathering also marked the 31st anniversary of the US embassy takeover in Tehran.
On October 28, Head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, known as the MI6, accused Iran of pursuing a military nuclear program.
“Stopping nuclear proliferation cannot be addressed purely by conventional diplomacy. We need intelligence-led operations to make it more difficult for countries like Iran to develop nuclear weapons,” John Sawers said in the first public speech by a serving UK spy chief.
The allegation came nearly a month after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reiterated in its latest report that all the nuclear material in Iran’s facilities are under the agency’s supervision.
More than three decades ago in November 1979 — less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution — Iranian university students took over the US Embassy in Tehran.
Iran found documents proving that the embassy was engaged in espionage activities and plans to overthrow the new establishment in Iran.
Iran has repeatedly refuted accusations by the US and its allies that Tehran is following a military nuclear program.
Iranian officials say the country’s nuclear program is completely peaceful and within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
