AIM holds session to discuss the challenges of studying in the Hawza

A seminar was held on Saturday 23rd March 2013 in London highlighting some of the guidelines and expectations of studying in the Islamic seminaries (Hawza). It aimed to shed light on a topic that has drawn increasing interest for Shia Muslims residing in the West, particularly from the younger generation.

Organised by AIM, the event titled ‘Reflections on Studying in the Hawza’ had the presence of Shaykh Usama Abdulghani, who has himself studied at the Hawza Ilmiya in Qum for more than 18 years now. He shared some personal experiences and familiarised the audience with some aspects about life in the Hawza. The Shaykh underlined the importance of the quest for knowledge and the need to seek this from rightful sources, emphasizing that this is an Islamic duty. He further noted that followers of the AhlulBayt (as) must earnestly strive to emulate their role models by improving their understanding of the teachings and characters of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the AhlulBayt (as).

Before concluding his speech, Shaykh Usama Abdulghani strongly encouraged those eager to prepare themselves spiritually before pursuing studies in the Hawza. He also recommended parents and the community to play a more pro-active role in eliminating social and cultural obstacles that prevent youths from embarking on this path. To the wider community, he urged the need to strengthen bonds with the Hawza and the learnt scholars therein, and not to be fooled by those claiming Islamic knowledge without studying correctly. He further emphasised that there is a need for fully trained scholars who have studied thoroughly because through them is the surest path to ensure leadership, unity, a correct understanding and a better future.

The program ended with an interactive Question & Answer session during which the audience had an opportunity to put forward their questions on the topic.

Martyrdom of Hadhrat Abul Fadhl al-Abbas(A) (Brother of Imam Husayn(A) – Deleted scene from Mokhtarnameh – استشهاد العباس

This scene was taken, however it was NOT included as part of the movie and this is why the face depicting Hadhrat Abbas(A) is not hidden in this video.

Mukhtar Nameh contained scenes depicting Hazrat Abbas (AS), brother of Imam Hussein (AS), which were never shown as result of clerics’ objections.

Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Alavi Gorgani, Ayatollah Hossein Mazaheri and Ayatollah Waheed Khorasani raised strong objections to the decision.

Ayatullah Waheed Khorasani was the most formidable opponent of the decision.

“I have heard that they want to have a screen actor (playing the role) of Hadhrat Abbas(A). God forbid that they could make such a blunder. Otherwise if they do this thing, there will be no excuse for what may happen and what we would say,” he said.

“If the face of an actor is depicted as Hadhrat Abbas(A), it would cause his devotees to riot; that could threaten the lives of the people who screen such pictures,” he warned.

Consequently, producer Mahmud Fallah announced that the scenes would be altered in the TV series due to the views of certain clerics.

The soundtrack in this workprint is not from the original Mokhtarnameh, and is an Arabic latom (Lamentation poetry) that was added to the version that made its way to the internet.

There is no need for a descriptive narrative, nor is there any need for subtitles in this video – the video gives the event of the Martyrdom of Hadhrat Abbas(A) very clearly and without any ambiguity. Hadhrat Abbas(A) went to get water for the thirsty children of the camp of Aba Abdillah al-Husayn(A), who had been barred from water by the forces of Yazid(LA) for three days. He got the water – he didn’t drink a drop himself – he tried to get it back to the camp of Imam Husayn(A) for the children, but was unable to due to the treachery of Yazid(LA)’s Army and it’s generals Umar ibn Sa’ad(LA) and Shimr ibn Dhiljawshan(LA).
