In His Name, the Most High

A few years ago, I had delivered a couple of lectures at various centres on the subject of Islamic Revolution and Imam Khomeini12, with a view to attempting to understand the roots of this most beautiful and amazing of Revolutions; a revolution that has been described as an Explosion of Light3.  It is a revolution that inspires and motivates and indeed revived the true Islam of Muhammad4.

The good folk over at Islamic Pulse felt that the speeches would provide a good backdrop for explaining the idea of the Islamic Revolution, and as a result put together an excellent video montage in this regard.  This is shown below:

What follows is a transcript – with explanations as applicable – of what has been montaged by Islamic Pulse, to create the video titled “The Idol Breakers”. The original source videos are referenced in Footnotes 1 and 2.

The Idol Breakers – Understanding the Islamic Revolution

This revolution was something that was the culmination and the continuation of the revolution that started over 1400 years ago, in Makkah.

So the roots of this revolution, stretch back to Rasul Allah5, no, even further, the roots of this revolution start from the time that Allah6 put Adam upon the Earth.

At that time those roots were set.

We have all of the Prophets7.  We have the story of when Nabi8 Ibrahim9 made resistance against someone who worshipped that which was created.  Nimrud10. He (Ibrahim) made a resistance against him and he paid a heavy price.  But Allah, 7amdu lillah11, protected him.  Nabi Ya’qub12 used to make resistance against those fake Gods13.  Nabi Yusuf14, 7amdu lillah15 managed to overthrow the fake gods in Egypt.

When Rasul Allah16 came to Makkah, he said to the people qulu la ilaha illa Allah, tuflihu. Say la ilaha illa Allah17, say that there is nothing worthy of worship, that there is nothing that I will make prostration to18 except for Allah, and you will be successful.

He eradicated something called secularism19.  Secularism is when the human considers him or her good enough, knowledgeable enough, about his entire existence, to be able to create laws20.

We can see, that the bulk of these ideas denied Allah, denied God.  They instead, worshipped the “God of the Self”21.  He (Prophet Muhammad) told them don’t rely on yourself22, don’t rely on these instructions that you manufacture yourself.  Don’t rely on a god23 which in reality is made of wood or is made of stone24.

If someone follows an ideology, which insists that they do not look up to the Creator, but instead that they turn to the created for instruction, there is a fundamental problem over here.

The highest cost, the most expensive price is submission to the despots.

And we, 7amdu lillah25, as Muslims, we learn this from the message of Aba Abdillah al-Husayn26 and Sayyedah Zaynab27, salamullah 3alayhim28.

Why did Imam Husayn29 come out against Yazid30?  Because Imam Husayn31, was obligated to do Amr bil Ma’rouf32 and Nahi Anil Munkar33; and make a resistance against the despots of the time.  Whatever the cost.

Moving, fast forwarding to 1979, Imam Khomeini, quddisa sirruh34, destroyed this thing called the Shah35.  Firaun36 said the same thing like Shah, that “I am your Lord the Most High”, “I don’t answer to anybody, I answer only to myself”37.

If we look at the American hegemony, the Western ideas, that were permeating.  We can see that the bulk of these ideas denied Allah, denied God.  They instead, worshipped the God of the Self38.

All of these systems.  Imam Khomeini was obligated to abide by the ideas of  Amr bil Ma’rouf39 and Nahi Anil Munkar40, and make a resistance against the despots of the time.  Whatever the cost.

That “I am your Lord the Most High”, “I don’t answer to anybody, I answer only to myself”41.  And this is the same cry, that we can see today, coming from Washington, from Tel Aviv and even from London.

Where they go, and the help certain people who they like, and they forget about other people who they don’t like.

Nimrud42, when Nimrud said to Hadhrat43 Ibrahim44, that I am the one who gives life and death.  So Ibrahim asked how do you do this?

So he (Nimrud) brought two prisoners, he killed one and he set the other one free45.  The same way, we can see the super powers of today, we can see them saying that “we create life and we give death”.  How!?

All of these systems, capitalism, socialism, Marxism, this-ism, that-ism, there’s so many isms!  Whatever they called it because it did not come from Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala46, because it wasn’t an understanding that wasn’t given by Senior Ulema47, because it didn’t stay in sync with the instructions of Imam Mahdi, 3ajjal Allahu t3ala farajuhu (a)sh-shareef48, where Imam Mahdi had told all of us, just before the start of Ghaybat-e-Kubra49, that if you have any issues, that if you have any problems, if you have any questions, then refer to the Righteous Faqih50, this is the word of Imam Mahdi for all of us.

Because of all of these systems didn’t do that, Imam Khomeini was obligated to abide by the ideas of Amr bil Ma’rouf51 and Nahi Anil Munkar52.

Capitalism, socialism, Marxism, this-ism, that-ism, there’s so many isms!

As-Sayyed Ruhullah al-Musawi al-Khumayni53 woke us up!  He took us out of our comatose state.  Where the life of another was meaningless, and where our allegiance was not to Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala54, where our preparation was not for the return of the Mahdi55, but it was purely and completely rooted in this world, and in this temporal domain.

What is “American Islam”? American “Islam” has only two branches:

One is “secular Islam”, the other is “fanatical Islam”.

From the viewpoint of Imam (Khomeini), both of these are rejected.

The first matter about Imam (Khomeini) is that he proved (and took us back to) the original Muhammadi Islam56 and rejected the “American Islam”.

And from Allah alone is all ability, and He is the ultimate recource in all matters.

  4. The phrase “true Islam of Muhammad” is a term used by Imam Khomeini to describe the original Islam or the pure Islam delivered by Prophet Muhammad.  It is a term that is synonymous with the Revolutionary Islam that was revived by Imam Khomeini through and in the run-up to the Islamic Revolution and its victory in Iran.  For a deeper understanding of the thoughts of Imam Khomeini, please study the book “Islam and Revolution” by Imam Khomeini – a collection of his speeches and works on this subject translated elegantly by Dr Hamid Algar
  5. The Prophet Muhammad is often in Muslim terminology referred to with the Arabic term Rasul Allah – which literally means the Prophet of God
  6. Allah is the Arabic term for God, linguistically it is the word in Arabic for God – Ilah, with the definitive article – “the” added to the front.  Therefore, the literal translation of Allah is “The God”
  7. According to Islamic teachings, since the dawn of time, since Adam, there have been 124,000 prophets, to every nation and tribe on the planet, with Prophet Muhammad being the last of them, and the seal of the Prophets
  8. The word Nabi is another word for Prophet or apostle of God.  There is a difference between the idea of a Nabi and a Rasul.  A Rasul has a divine book delivered by him to the masses, whereas a Nabi doesn’t.  It is also valid to say that every Rasul is a Nabi, but not every Nabi is a Rasul
  9. Ibrahim is the Arabized version of Abraham, one of the greatest of the Prophets, and known as the great Patriarch, as well as in Islamic terminology the Friend of God – Khalil Allah.
  10. Known as Nimrod.  This was the ruler at the time of Abraham.  Nimrod rebelled against the Creator and declared himself as a deity, he declared that he had the power of giving and taking life and such.  A detailed discussion on Nimrod can be found here
  11. This is an Arabic phrase, it is pronounced al-hamdu-lil-lah and meaning All praise is due to God.  The spelling has the letter 7, as I have used a typing technique for rendering Arabic correctly in the Latin script known as Arabic Chat Alphabet.  This makes the understanding of various words in Arabic a lot simpler – especially for speakers of Arabic – though in the opinion of some people can be quite unsightly when reading in the Latin script
  12. Ya’qub is the Arabized version of Jacob.  Jacob was another one of the great prophets of God, like Abraham, who was the father of Joseph and is also known as Israel.  The Children of Israel are the Children of Jacob, from the 12 sons that he had including Joseph (Yusuf in Arabic and Islamic terminology

  17. This is the Islamic testimony of Unity (Tawheed), it means literally, there is none worthy of worship, except Allah (see footnote 6 for explanation of what Allah means)
  18. To bow down to, to make obeisance to. Obeisance can only be made to that which has actual power, and as a result, it is impossible to make obeisance to any other than God, who is the only true and actual power.

  20. Without using or relying on any divine ideology as a basis for understanding the human condition, and indeed rejecting the divine, in favour of the temporal

This is another way of saying that the divine was ignored and rendered invalid or void even and that all matters were decided and legislated without any divine morality, but by the morality of the self, falling back to the base animalistic self.  Naturally, this is a very simple explanation as a footnote, the subject of secularism is a complex one, and I will cover it at a later stage in a comprehensive article, God willing

  23. The reference here is to the pagan gods and other false deities.  The Prophet Muhammad was speaking when he said this to the pagans of Makkah, hence the context is important to understand what is being said.

The Shah references the Pahlavi monarch, who was brought to power by the CIA’s Operation Ajax when they deposed the democratically elected president Mosaddeq of Iran.  The Shah was not a leader who was working in the best interests of his country or people, rather he instigated projects and policies that removed the rights from the people of Iran and granted them to the West – be it America or the British.  More details about the reign of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, can be found in the excellent book by Islam and Revolution by Imam Khomeini and translated by Dr Hamid Algar

  48. This term is again an Arabic and Islamic phrase that is used generally after mentioning the name of the Awaited Savior, Imam al-Mahdi, the twelfth Imam of the Muslims, who is in a state of occultation, that is to say, we can’t see him, however, he is aware of us and sees us.  For more information on Imam Mahdi, please see Imam al-Mahdi – the Just Leader of Humanity, by Ayatullah Ibrahim Amini.  The term is a supplication/prayer to God and means “May God, the Most High, hasten his return and the honourable relief (that will come from his returning)”.
  49. This is a term, in this form it is a Farsified Arabic term – the pure Arabic term would be Ghaybat al-Kubra – that is given to the greater occultation of Imam al-Mahdi – please see The Occultation of the Twelfth Imam (A Historical Background) by Jassim M. Hussein.  The greater occultation – which still continues to this day, started in 941, while the minor occultation was from 874 to 941.  During the minor occultation, when the Imam had four explicitly nominated deputies who were in direct contact with the Imam, and they were in contact the people.  In the time of the greater occultation – there are no explicitly nominated deputies, but that those from the Ulema who had a series of characteristics and qualities – brought about by their hard work on self-purification, self-building, knowledge – deep knowledge – of the many Islamic Sciences, a clear and highly advanced knowledge of Islamic Jurisprudence and of the Quran and Ahadith (traditions narrated from the Prophet Muhammad, and his family and righteous companions) and much more besides, who protected themselves through self-control and awareness of God from committing sins and crimes against others as well as themselves.  For more information on this and on the four deputies of Imam Mahdi during his minor occultation please see the book titled Special Deputies published by the Association of Imam Mahdi
